Man smiling in the pool

After over 30 years of competitive swimming, starting back in middle school, Josh Danielson recently added another incredible milestone to his list of accomplishments: completing the YMCA’s 100-Mile Swim Challenge in 2024.

Josh is no stranger to the water—or to competition. By his own account, he proudly claims the title of “Fastest Swimmer in the 40 to 60 Year-Olds Over the Noon Hour” category (with a friendly nod to his rivals, Paul Cool and Mick Quinn). Several times a week, Josh swims an impressive 2,000 yards per session. True to his roots, he still follows the exact same workout given to him decades ago by his coach, Carl Shuldes.  Josh gives two reasons for sticking to this routine for so long:

  1. "Carl was a fantastic instructor."
  2. "I hate change."

Josh jokes about his loud breathing during workouts, claiming he’s grateful for the YMCA staff’s kindness in not openly judging him as he “huffs and puffs his way to greatness.” It’s this blend of humility and humor that makes his story so relatable and inspiring to anyone considering their own fitness goals.

Josh’s achievement is a testament to the power of routine, determination, and finding joy in the journey. Whether you’re chasing a new personal best, looking to start a fitness routine, or just hoping to huff and puff your way to your own version of greatness, Josh’s story proves that the YMCA is the perfect place to dive in.

What will you achieve in 2025?
