At 75 years old, Peggy Karsten has reached the milestone of completing 100 miles in the pool in 2024. Her journey to this achievement is a story of perseverance, community, and the transformative power of fitness at the Kandiyohi County Area Family YMCA.
Peggy’s love for swimming began decades ago when she earned college credit as a Water Safety Instructor and taught swimming lessons. In the early 1990s, she suffered a broken leg after falling off a horse. That event brought Peggy back to the water—not just as a passion but as a means of recovery. She began swimming at the Junior High School in Willmar, eventually joining the YMCA 20 years ago, where she has been a dedicated swimmer ever since.
Peggy’s routine is inspiring. She swims three times a week, often following up her laps with a Water Fitness class. These classes not only keep her active but have been a vital part of her journey to overcoming challenges. Starting in January 2024, Peggy took on the YMCA’s 100-Mile Club challenge, pushing herself to new limits. Early in her journey, Peggy began experiencing back pain that made her question whether she could finish the challenge. However, her determination—and the supportive community at the YMCA—kept her going.
During a Water Fitness class, Peggy’s instructor, Pat Fith, recommended a back specialist at a clinic in Alexandria. That referral changed everything. With proper treatment, Peggy was able to return to the pool stronger than ever, swimming a full mile in an hour—PAIN-FREE!
On November 20, 2024, Peggy achieved her goal of completing 100 miles, a feat that not only demonstrates her perseverance but also highlights the power of a supportive fitness community. Peggy’s story is a testament to the importance of finding the right environment and resources to support your wellness journey.
Peggy’s journey reminds us that it’s never too late to set ambitious goals, overcome obstacles, and thrive. Whether you’re dealing with physical challenges or just looking for a supportive place to start your fitness journey, your YMCA community is here for you—just as it was for Peggy.
